Preservatives / Anti-microbials
Strictly speaking soap doesn't really require the addition of anti-microbials (the available water content in solid soaps is, generally, too low to support microbial growth) however some soaps may benefit from "preservatives" - really anti-rancidity agents ("antioxidants") to protect any superfatting agents or where unsatturated oils have been used in the manufacture of the soap. Lotions, and other blends that have relatively high water contents and pH between 4 and 9, will require the addition of an anti-microbial and possibly other preservatives as well.
Soaper Scentral offers a range of preservatives and anti-microbials suitable for crafters to incorporate into their own soap or lotion formulations. Some are best suited in slightly acid media, some in neutral media and some in alkaline media. There are also some "broad spectrum" anti-microbials available for incorporation into soaps specifically designed as "anti-bacterial" soaps.
