Procedure
- Add water to mixing vessel
- Add SLES 70 and mix slowly until fully dissolved (sometimes helps to leave overnight)
- Add Cocodiethanolamine and mix until fully incorporated
- Bring to neutral (pH 7) with Citric Acid solution (Not really necessary, as this is a mild formulation anyway).
- Add fragrance, dye and preservative. Note that adding too much fragrance will produce a cloudy solution that will not easily gel.
- When fully mixed slowly add salt solution in 1% increments (eg if making 1 litre of mixture add 10 mls per addition) and mix in well.
- As solution starts to thicken, reduce amount of salt solution to 0.5% per addition.
- Note that, if too much salt is added, solution will thin RAPIDLY. It IS NOT generally possible to rethicken the solution if you add too much salt, so take it easy.
-
If the final product is a little bit cloudy, there are a number of possible ways to TRY and fix the clouding :
-
Small additions (0.1 - 0.25%) of either Polysorbate 20 OR alcohol OR urea may be effective. All of these products are hydrotropes which act to allow materials which are only slightly soluble in each other to be "coupled".
